Are Meta Tags a Mistake?

Meta tags have been a critical part of SEO for as long as we can remember.  Now a new experiment conducted by SEOChat forumer Jennifer Sullivan-Cassidy suggests that meta tags have become out-dated and possibly even harmful to a site's page rank.

In an effort to promote natural site optimization only, could search engines be ignoring the tags that were created specifically for their spiders?  It appears that at least some search engines are in fact disregarding meta tags -- though they are still scanning them long enough to check (and penalize) sites that abuse keywords.  After giving this apparent phenomenon some consideration, it really does make sense.  Search engines can safely assume that sites created without meta tags were designed to offer real, quality content to their visitors instead of pandering for page rank.

I can't wait to see more results from Cassidy's experiment.  In the meantime, I'm enjoying reading what others have to say about the results so far.

Google to Compete with iTunes?

Rumor has it Google is planning to launch an online music store similar to Apple's iTunes.  According to The Financial Times, both Google and Amazon have been chatting with music industry pros, hoping to reduce the hold Apple has on the legal music download market.

Changes have been noted in Google's private directories, as well as posted job openings relating to a (new?) audio department in New York City.  Google also owns the rights to the domain, www.googlemusic.com, but that site has been vacant since it was purchased in 2003.

FlexGo: The First Pay-As-You-Go PC

With pay-as-you-go technology making headway in the mobile phone industry, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Microsoft is planning to offer a similar, low-cost option for new PC users.  This program, called FlexGo, will be available in areas where low incomes and poor credit often make the purchase of such a high ticket item nearly impossible.  As users buy more time on their FlexGo PC's, they get closer and closer to ownership.  Once a designated amount of time has been purchased, the PC becomes available for unlimted use by its new owner.

A complementary internet service is also being considered as part of the package, allowing pay-as-you-go PC owners to purchase internet access the same way.
