Years ago, long before I began working in SEO and understanding the principles behind search engine optimization techniques, I created a volunteer organization and built said organization a very primitive website.  I didn't realize that certain things needed to be done in order to get that site picked up by the major (and minor) search engines, and so it sat.  I'm sure the only way people found out about it was by word of mouth. 

Now that I've been working in the industry for awhile, I see how naive I was back then.  If I could go back and counsel my former self to hire a proper internet marketing company, I would.  In truth, any new internet venture can really benefit from the use of a qualified and professional SEO firm.  This is especially true if the aim of the business is to generate revenue by selling products or services, but it also applies if you're trying to recruit volunteers or raise awareness about an important issue.

Because search engines are frequently changing and updating the way they rank websites (and thus, changing who comes up first in search results), doing one's own internet marketing can be time consuming and fruitless.  SEO services rarely come cheap, but paying an experienced company to optimize your site is one investment that will surely pay you back in time!
